ASBURY PARK - If the Asbury Park boys soccer team's undefeated 2016 season in Class B Central divisional play was a surprise, the 2017 team is proving it was no fluke.

The Blue Bishops won their 23rd straight divisional match Tuesday by beating St. Rose, 3-2, a streak that began at the end of Asbury Park's forgettable 5-12 campaign in 2015.

Davensky JoinVilmar and Wenderlens Garius scored in the first half and Johnny Phillipe's second-half goal proved the difference. JoinVilmar's goal was his 20th of the season and he has scored in all 11 of Asbury Park's games.

JoinVilmar scored 16 goals and assisted 15 during an All-Shore campaign a year ago while leading the Blue Bishops to an 18-4 record and NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I championship. It took the senior striker only eight games to match his goal total that took 22 games last year.

Evan Walter and Ethan Tombs each scored in the final three minutes to make things interesting before Asbury Park successfully ran out the clock.

Asbury Park will try to close out a second straight undefeated season within B Central by winning its final three regular-season matches, but only needs to defeat Point Pleasant Beach on Monday to clinch the division title for the second consecutive season after going more than three decades without one prior to 2016. The Blue Bishops will conclude their regular season against Ranney and Henry Hudson.
