No. 8 Toms River South 2, No. 5 Holmdel 1

Senior Ryan Shiffer scored the winning goal off a rebound in the 71st minute and the Indians rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit to knock off the Hornets in the opener for the two top-10 teams.

Senior John Timmes ran down a long pass from senior Jordan Urbaczek and hit an initial shot on goal that Holmdel junior goalkeeper Tyler Marchiano parried away. Shiffer crashed the far post and poked the follow-up shot into the open net to give his team the lead.

Toms River South tied the game in the 66th when Shiffer threw the ball ahead to junior Cameron Geerinck, who outran the Holmdel defense and beat Marchiano to the far left post from the right angle.

Shiffer nearly had two other goals, the first that was saved by Tyler Marchiano in the first half and the second that was disallowed after Shiffer tried to score on a restart with the defense not paying attention. The ball was rested, but the official said the ball was not close enough to the spot of the foul to allow.

Holmdel grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a finish from sophomore Brendan Wall. Senior center midfielder Menos Hiras played the ball through to junior Nick Chrystal on the left side of the field and Chrystal got the ball to Wall at the top of the 18-yard box. After two touches, Wall hit a shot just out of the reach of Indians keeper Kollin White, who got his hand on the ball before it got inside the left post.
