Boys Basketball – Week 5 Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey Player of the Week: Doug Chan, Holmdel
Week 5 Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey Player of the Week
Doug Chan, Holmdel
Holmdel surged past the .500 mark with a 3-0 week and Chan reached double-figure scoring in all three Hornets wins. The sophomore posted 19 points in a win over Red Bank on Jan. 16, then poured in 18 to help his team beat Shore on Jan. 18. He capped the week with a 10-point outing Saturday in a win over Manalapan.
The Hornets entered this season yet again needing to replace a significant scorer in Nick Harris and coach Sean Devaney and his players have once again made it work. Senior Tim Zhou has been the leader and scorer the Hornets have expected and Chan has emerged as a second scoring option.
Chan collected 43.7 percent of the more than 51,000 votes cast - far and away the most ever in a Player of the Week vote - to win what turned out to be a three-horse race for this week's award. Middletown South senior James Baldo came in second this week at better than 30 percent and Central Regional senior Tom Ruscitti picked up 21 percent of the vote to finish third.
