Boys Basketball – Week 4 Player of the Week
SSN Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey Player of the Week
Matt Shiffer, Toms River South
On volume, other players had higher scoring weeks last week, but Toms River South senior Matt Shiffer was more about quality than quantity. Shiffer averaged 12 points over two games last week, but both were Indians win and one was thanks to his last-second heroics.
On Jan. 9, Shiffer converted a layup with three seconds left to break a 39-39 tie and give Toms River South a big Class A South win over Brick – currently the third place team in the division. Shiffer finished the game with a team-high nine points.
Toms River South added another win to its resume on Jan. 12 by beating Brick Memorial, 41-33, led by 15 points from Shiffer.
Shiffer collected nearly 33 percent of the more than 10,000 votes cast in this week’s Player of the Week poll. Middletown South junior Dave Gervase made a late push in the final hours of the voting and closed within 300 votes and three percent of Shiffer, but Toms River South faithful helped Shiffer hold off the charge.
Shore Regional sophomore Kyle Koob picked up just shy of 20 percent of the vote while Freehold Township senior Steve Staklinski earned north of 11 percent of the voting in his second appearance of the season on the list of candidates.
