Tyler Schmelz was named the new head boys basketball coach at Red Bank Catholic Monday, according to the RBC Athletic Dept.

A graduate of Red Bank Catholic, Schmelz spent the last two seasons as an assistant under head coach Jim Catalano. Prior to joining the staff at his alma mater, Schmelz spent four seasons as the head coach at the Ranney School, where he amassed a career record of 19-73.

Schmelz's best season as a head coach was his fourth and final year at Ranney, during which he led the Panthers to a 9-15 mark in 2013-14.

Schmelz met with the players Monday afternoon and will take over a Caseys team that went 12-14 during the 2015-16 season. RBC missed the Shore Conference Tournament, losing to St. John Vianney on the final Saturday before the cutoff with a chance to qualify with a win.

The Caseys graduate two top players in Eddie Hahn and Evan Madigan, both of whom are playing other sports at the college level - Hahn football at the University of Connecticut and Madigan baseball at Bucknell University.

Next season, the Caseys will rely on returnees Terence Calandrillo and Matt Ansell. As a junior this past season, Calandrillo was the third-leading scorer on the team at 8.2 per game, while Ansell appeared in 24 of 26 games and earned experience as a starter by the end of the year.

Schmelz's hiring is the first of two high-profile head-coaching positions that athletic director Joe Montano will fill in the coming weeks. Football coach Jim Portela resigned last week.
