Class A South

Central 51, Brick Memorial 41

Senior Zion Hardy led a balanced Central scoring effort with 13 points and the Golden Eagles (2-0, 2-0) took care of the Mustangs (0-2, 0-1) for their second win in as many games to open the season.

Junior Xavier Jackson pitched in nine points for Central while seniors Maks Gruszecki and Denis Corbin contributed eight points each.

Junior Anthony Argondizza led Brick Memorial with 12 points and classmate Dan Lahey added 11 in defeat.

Brick 58, Jackson Memorial 49

Senior Noah Buono and sophomore Shane Williams scored 21 points each an the Green Dragons (1-1, 1-1) separated from the Jaguars (0-2, 0-1) with a 16-8 third-quarter run that earned Brick its first win of the season.

Buono also grabbed 10 rebounds while Williams filled up the stat sheet with six rebounds, five assists, three steals and four blocks. Senior Brandon Williams also contributed 10 assists and six steals to go with three points and senior Anthony DeStefano had six points, six boards and four blocks.

Senior Nick Barba led Jackson Memorial with 17 points and senior John Pitlak pitched in 12.

Toms River South 47, Toms River East 45

Senior Tylar Rinkerman scored on a tip-in with three seconds left and the Indians (1-1, 1-0) beat the Raiders (0-2, 0-1) in the waning seconds of the A South opener for both teams. Senior Denzel Wilson led Toms River South with 16 points and senior Matt Shiffer added 13 in the win.

Juniors Zyaire Dorn and Ryan Allendar led Toms River East with 11 points apiece.

 

Class B Central

Keansburg 49, Henry Hudson 38

Junior Danny Vital scored 18 points and classmate Vaughn Fitzgerald added 14 to lead the Titans (1-1, 1-1) to a road win over the Admirals (0-2, 0-2).

Senior Matt Going led Henry Hudson with 12 points and fellow senior Tom Fennell added 11 in the loss.

No. 1 Mater Dei Prep 78, Keyport 27

Senior Elijah Barnes scored a game-high 14 points and juniors Kenny Jones and Adam Afifi scored 12 apiece as the Seraphs (2-0, 2-0) rolled to their second straight win by a 50-plus-point margin to open the season by beating the Red Raiders (0-2, 0-2). Jones also added four assists and eight steals.

Senior Elijah Mitchell also pitched in nine points, five assists and five steals for Mater Dei.

No. 8 Point Beach 80, St. Rose 67

Juniors Trevor Covey and Danny Frauenheim sparked a 17-0 run over the final three-plus minutes that closed the game and delivered the Garnet Gulls (1-1, 1-1) a big win over the Purple Roses (2-1, 1-1) on the road. Covey finished with a game-high 24 points and Frauenheim finished with 19 as Point Beach erased a 67-63 fourth-quarter deficit.

Senior Stephen Flanders added 13 points, junior Chris Pina had nine and junior Jake Lorenzo poured in eight for Point Beach.

Senior Bill Frost hit four three-pointers and scored 16 points to lead St. Rose, which wiped out a 41-28 halftime deficit and took the lead with six minutes left in the fourth. Senior Brendan Hueth and junior Dave Calloway added 14 points each for the Roses, which had five players reach double-figure scoring. Senior Nick Paterno added 11 points and junior Junior John Crowley poured in 12 off the bench.

 

Class B South

No. 10 Lakewood 44, Barnegat 38

Senior Adi Palmer posted 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead the Piners (2-0, 2-0) to a road win over the Bengals (1-1, 1-1).

Junior Mike Revello led Barnegat with a game-high 16 points and sophomore Carson Francisco contributed 11.

Donovan Catholic 58, Manchester 39

Junior Joe San Fillippo scored a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds and junior Jethro Moll added 16 points and five assists as the Griffins (2-1, 2-0) rolled to a win over the Hawks (1-2, 1-1) on the road. Senior Jared Small also poured in nine points to go with four steals.

Senior L.J. Robinson led Manchester with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Jackson Liberty 52, Pinelands 46

Sophomore Daniel Sofield pumped in 24 points and the Lions (1-2, 1-1) beat the Wildcats (0-3, 0-2) for their first win of the season. Sophomore Anthony Diaz and senior Chris Burke combined for 35 of Pinelands' 46 points, with Diaz scoring 18 and Burke netting 17.
