David Melfi, Jackson Liberty

The sophomore backstop continued his breakout season at the plate during a 2-2 week for the Lions. Against Toms River North, Melfi was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple and in an 11-8 loss to Toms River South in the SCT round of 16, he went 2-for-3 with three RBI – including a game-tying two-run single in the sixth inning.

Melfi drew a whopping 72.8 percent of the nearly 10,000 votes cast to secure a landslide win over the next closest candidate. Lacey senior Anthony Elefante finished second in the vote with 10 percent.

Shore Sports Network Pitcher of the Week

Matt Pickus, Jackson Liberty

The junior right-hander turned in another strong start for the Lions, this time shutting down Class A Central champion Raritan in the SCT opening round. Pickus allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk while striking out five in Jackson Liberty’s 5-1 win over the Rockets. Pickus’s last three appearances include a win over No. 1 Toms River North, his win over Raritan and a win in relief Tuesday in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III first round.

Pickus ran away with the award, winning 68 percent of the more than 5,600 votes cast. Keyport’s Lucas Dant was the only other player to reach a double-digit percentage with 13 percent of the vote.
