Junior right-hander Mike Wynne pitched five strong innings with seven strikeouts and junior Mike Walsh doubled twice and drove in four to lead the Rebels (1-1, 1-1) to a win over the Mustangs (1-1, 1-1). Wynne allowed on run on five hits and did not walk a batter in his 66-pitch outing.

Walsh finished 3-for-5 to lead the offense, Ean Craig was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, and senior Nick Lorenzo finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Junior Grant Hackett also went 1-for-2 with three walks, a run scored and two RBI.

Junior Justin Levito and sophomore Justin Kapuscinski each went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Marlboro, with Levito also driving in a run and Kapuscinski cracking his second double in as many games. Sophomore Ian Li took the loss on the mound in relief of starter Noah Hutter, who gave up a run on two hits and four walks while striking out five in just two innings.

Senior middle-infielders Jack Mangold and John Juco each doubled, scored two runs, and drove in one in to lead the Bucs (1-1, 1-1) past the Hornets (0-2, 0-2). Mangold finished 3-for-3 while Juco was 2-for-4.

Both Jack Stamer and Matt Santos also went 2-for-4 and Aidan Kelly pitched in a pinch-hit, two-run single.

Will Grant earned the win in relief of starter Jack Povey, who worked four-plus innings. Holmdel scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning off both Povey and Grant, highlighted by a solo home run by junior Sal Monticiollo, who finished 2-for-3.

No. 9 Brick 4, Toms River East 1

The Green Dragons (1-1, 1-0) scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock off the Raiders (0-1, 0-1).

Senior John Prato and Chris Salsano started the rally with back-to-back two-out singles and after a walk by Mike Soldo loaded the bases, Joe Guerra ripped a two-run single to right-centerfield to give Brick the lead. A.J. Serrino then followed with a two-run double to cap the run.

Junior Danny Clemente launced a solo home run to give Toms River East the 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, one of just two hits off Brick starter John Zurawski. Zurawski went the distance to earn the win, striking out nine and walking two.

Junior Nick DeGennaro struck out 11 and did not walk a batter over six innings while suffering the loss. He allowed all four runs on six hits, four of which came during the sixth-inning rally.

Junior Blaine Netterman went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Brick Memorial attack.

Junior Sam Sestito pitched a no-hitter in his first varsity start and the Purple Roses beat the Garnet Gulls to open the season. Sestito allowed an earned run, walked three and struck out two while throwing 98 pitches.

Junior Will Gannon was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while senior Brandon Mology went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Junior Riley Maypother also doubled and drove in three runs, senior Joe Volpe was 1-for-5 with two RBI and senior Brendan Hueth finished 1-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win.

Sophomore Noah Dean pitched a no-hitter in his first start of the season and the Wildcats topped the Piners for an opening-day win. Dean struck out 11 and walked five on 105 pitches.

Lakewood junior Terrence Cole-Woddson walked and scored on a throwing error in the sixth to break up the shutout.

Seniors Tommy Allen and Tommy Madge each delivered two-out RBI hits for Pinelands. Allen plated the game's first run with an RBI double in the fourth and Madge came through with an RBI single in the fifth that turned out to be the game-winner.

 

Manchester 8, Donovan Catholic 5

Manchester senior starter Gavin Pabst helped himself off the hook by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and the Hawks (1-0, 1-0) used a four-run fifth to overtake the Griffins (1-1, 1-1) and hold on for a win in their opener.

Pabst (52 pitches) gave up five runs on five hits in three innings of work before Patrick Carney came on for three shutout innings to earn the win. Pabst struck out four and walked one, while Carney gave up two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three during a 39-pitch relief outing.

Senior left-hander Joe Felipe pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save while throwing 12 pitches and also hit a two-run home run.

Senior Matt Miggliaccio also went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI at the plate for the Hawks. Sophomore Jack Felipe was also 2-for-4 with a double.

Bart Goble went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Ryan O'Sullivan was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored for Donovan Catholic.

 

Lacey 4, Point Boro 0

Senior Don Zellman threw a one-hit shutout on 81 pitches and the Lions (2-0, 1-0) blanked the defending B South champion Panthers (0-2, 0-2) for their second straight win to open the season. Zellman struck out eight, walked two and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, when Point Boro freshman Nick Guzzi broke up Zellman's bid with a two-out single to left.

Zellman took the mound in the bottom of the first already leading 3-0 thanks to a three-run double in the first by senior Brandon Haggerty. Senior Anthony Elefante later added an RBI single and finished 1-for-3. Zellman also finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
