Class A North

Freehold 3, Howell 1

Frank Granato drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the fifth and Tom Holdorf added an RBI single in the seventh to help the Colonials (8-9, 5-6) pull out a win over the Rebels (6-7, 5-5). Nick Zuppe scored on the Granato single and also drove in a run in the second inning.

Dante Cuzzolino threw a complete game to earn the win, allowing a run on four hits and three walks whle striking out a five.

No. 1 CBA 13, Middletown North 6

Senior second baseman Andrew Buccellatto went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and junior Luca Dalatri was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to help lead the CBA offense in a Colts (12-3, 8-2) win over the the Lions (4-9, 3-7), snapping a brief two-game skid.

Senior shortstop Matt D'Angelo also went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the win.

Freshman center fielder Tyler Ras finished 1-for-2 with two RBI for Middletown North. Junior third baseman Kyle Capo also went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.

Manalapan 4, Freehold Twp. 3 (9 Innings)

Junior shortstop Chris Rodriguez doubled in the top of the ninth and scored the winning run on an RBI single by junior center fielder Stephen Hansen to help the Braves (12-5, 5-5) top the Patriots (7-9, 3-8) for their sixth win in seven games.

Brandon Roth hit a two-out, two-strike, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 3 and send it to extra innings. Roth finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.

Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored a, while Hansen and Matt Klepper were each 2-for-5 with a run and a stolen base. Matt Rosenberg was also 2-for-4 with an RBI double for the Braves.

Sophomore John Pudder pitched the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win for Manalapan. Nick Serra threw the first seven innings for Manalapan, while Mike Pirotta lasted six for Freehold Township.

John Carroll finished 2-for-4 and Joe Silvestrone was 2-for-5 for Freehold Township.

No. 6 Middletown South 9, No. 5 Marlboro 5

Junior Johnny Zega pitched 5 2/3 no-hit innings of relief and hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to lead the Eagles (10-5, 6-4) to a come-from-behind win over the Mustangs (8-5, 6-4) - their eighth straight win and 10th win in their last 11 games. Zega did not walk a batter in his winning performance out of the bullpen.

Junior Austin Markmann went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI for Middletown South, which trailed 5-0 after the first inning, but rallied tie the game with a four-run third inning off Marlboro starter Andrew Nardi.

 

Class A Central

Monmouth 4, Holmdel 3

The Falcons (6-5, 5-3) managed only one hit but walked 17 times on the way to a win over the Hornets (2-10, 1-7). Andrew Slinger delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the lone Monmouth hit, which was also the go-ahead run.

James Seldner earned his first varsity win with three innings of relief, during which Seldner allowed only two hits. D.J. Goins hit a pinch-hit, two-run double in the fourth inning to give Holmdel a 3-2 lead.

Shore 5, Raritan 4

Junior Chas Breithoff pitched a complete-game three-hitter and the Blue Devils (7-6, 5-4) benefitted from seven Raritan errors on the way to a win over the Rockets (8-4, 5-4). Junior shortstop Michael O'Halloran went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and senior outfielder Ryan Campi was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Manasquan 6, No. 10 St. John Vianney 5 (9 Innings)

St. John Vianney misplayed a pop fly with two out in the bottom of the ninth, allowing the tying and winning runs to score and give the Warriors (6-5, 6-3) a walk-off win over the Lancers (8-3, 5-3). The extra-inning win is the second by Manasquan against St. John Vianney this season, with the first being a combined no-hitter by Tommy and Jack Sheehan.

Tyler Bradley and Tanner Cowley hit consecutive one-out singles to start the three-run rally in the ninth. Bradley scored on a fielder's choice ground out by John Driscoll and both Cowley and Driscoll scored on Matt Edwards' pop up with the bases loaded and two out.

St. John Vianney took a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Victor Jamandron.

Jack Sheehan pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 4-0. Marc Galvan took the no-decision after allowing one earned run and striking out six over 4 1/3 innings.

Bradley finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Chris Cerniglia finished 3-for-4 to lead St. John Vianney.

 

Class A South

No. 2 Toms River North 7, Brick Memorial 1

Ryan Larsen and Joe Venditto each drove in two runs and the Mariners (10-2, 9-1) scored six runs in the top of the sixth to beat the Mustangs (7-9, 2-7) and make a winner out of senior starter Brett Hyers.

Hyers allowed one unearned run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven to improve to 3-0. Larsen doubled home two runs in the sixth while Brandon Fischer doubled home a run and scored in the big inning. Venditto finished 2-for-3 with a run scored to go with his two RBI.

Corey Cathey doubled home the lone Brick Memorial run to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Kyle McCabe pitched into the sixth and allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out six in defeat.

 

Class B North

No. 4 Colts Neck 10, Long Branch 3

Matawan 8, Neptune 5

Anthony Hirujo pitched six innings of relief and Joe Piscopo ignited a Matawan comeback with an inside-the-park home run in the third as the Huskies (4-8, 4-5) rallied to beat the Scarlet Fliers (2-10, 1-9). Hirujo allowed two runs while striking out five and walking two in relief of starter Adam Elliott, who left the game feeling ill, according to Matawan coach Bobby Carnovsky.

Piscopo's two-run inside-the-park home run was part of a three-run third inning that cut Neptune's lead to 4-3. Matawan took the lead with four runs in the fourth, beginning with a game-tying RBI single by Hirujo, followed by a go-ahead two-run double by Nick Smith. Matt Esposito capped the inning with an RBI single.

Hunter Daly went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Neptune.

Wall 12, No. 9 Ocean 3

Matt Yard allowed two runs on five hits over six innings and Mike Yard hit a two-run home run in the seventh to help lead the Crimson Knights (10-4, 6-3) to a win over the Spartans (11-4, 4-4).

Dan Wondrack also homered and drove in two as part of a two-hit game, while Ryan Orender also added a pair of hits and an RBI for Wall. Wondrack, Regan Dombroski and Sean Larkin each had an RBI single in the four-run Wall first and Dombroski also had an RBI double in a four-run seventh for the Crimson Knights.

Marc Chernin hit two solo home runs to lead Ocean.

No. 5 Red Bank Catholic 10, Red Bank 4

Senior Tom Merlo went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and sophomore Anthony DeRosa drove in three runs as the Caseys (11-2, 9-1) beat the crosstown rival Bucs (4-9, 3-7) under the lights at Count Basie Park.

Mike Ianelli and Dom Caraballo each went 2-for-3, with Ianelli driving in a run and Caraballo driving in two and stealing a base.

Senior Isaiah Sestito was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored while junior Nick Massa went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI for Red Bank.

 

Class B South

Jackson Liberty 5, Donovan Catholic 2

Senior Howard Taylor hit a two-run home run in the first and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI to help lead the Lions (7-4, 7-2) to a win over the Griffins (9-5, 6-3), giving Jackson Liberty sole possession of first place in Class B South.

Junior Brandon Pallante allowed one run on two hits over five innings to earn the win before giving way to Ryan Van Wickle, who closed the game with two innings of relief.

Sophomore Kyle Tavaska also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot for Jackson Liberty.

Pinelands 9, Manchester 2

Senior Dave DeFeo went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and six RBI to help carry the Wildcats (6-7, 5-5) to a win over the Hawks (6-6, 5-5). Senior Mitch Merrill also went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Sage Sysol also knocked in a pair of runs in the win.

Darian Martinez scattered seven hits over seven innings to earn the win for Pinelands.

Ryan Vanderham was 3-for-4 with three doubles for Manchester while Mark Wernoch drove in both Manchester runs.

 

Non-Conference

Brick 12, Academy Charter 2 (5 Innings)

Carmen Sclafani, Nick Moglia and Matt Greenberg combined to go 7-for-7 and the Green Dragons (7-6) rolled to a win over Academy Charter. Sclafani was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Moglia went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Greenberg finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
