Class A Central

No. 3 Red Bank Catholic 4, Monmouth 1

Senior Tom Puza gave up a run on four hits with seven strikeouts to earn the win and the  Caseys (1-0, 1-0) beat the Falcons (0-1, 0-1) in Ted Jarmusz's return to Monmouth.

Jarmusz spent 30 seasons as Monmouth's head coach before retiring following the 2012-2013 school year and is now an assistant at Red Bank Catholic. Monmouth unveiled the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championship banner on the left field fence and presented Jarmusz with the Shore Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year hardware at home plate.

Senior Brendan Madigan went 3-for-4 with a run scored and sophomore Evan Madigan finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single to open the scoring in the top of the fifth. Red Bank Catholic scored two runs to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth thanks to two errors and a walk by the Falcons.

Christian Hoplock went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Monmouth, while Christian DeFazio allowed one earned run in six innings in taking the loss on the mound.

No. 5 St. John Vianney 10, Rumson-Fair Haven 1

The Lancers (1-0, 1-0) erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a two-run game and rolled to a win over the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1) on opening day. Senior Pat Devenney hit a two-run double in the inning and Chris Loney added an RBI single to cap the frame.

Seniors Chris Morris, Joe Rotelli and Anthony Santoro added a double each and senior left-hander Justin Chin allowed just a third-inning run in picking up the win.

 

Class A South

No. 2 Jackson Memorial 5, Brick Memorial 0

Junior Brandon Janofsky scattered seven singles over six scoreless innings and the Jaguars (1-0, 1-0) racked up 10 hits in a win over the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1). Senior Nick Dabrio went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a stolen base, while senior Mike Petrizzo was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior outfielder Matt Crispe also went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Jaguars, while junior Joe Demaio added a double.

No. 7 Toms River North 7, Lacey 6

Joe Venditto singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and the Mariners (1-0, 1-0) began their Shore Conference Tournament title defense by pulling out an opening-day win over the Lions (0-1, 0-1) to give new head coach Andy Pagano his first career win. Venditto went 4-for-4 with three RBI in his first varsity game, while senior Julian Feliz, sophomore Joey Rose and junior Mike Tiplady all had two hits each for Toms River North.

Toms River North tied the game with two runs in the sixth and after the Mariners loaded the bases in the seventh, Venditto ripped a two-out single up the middle to score Feliz from third with the winning run.

Feliz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Rose went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, and Tiplady finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Mariners trailed 6-3 after the top of the fifth and scored in each of the last four innings to steal the victory. Junior Doug Molnar scattered nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief while surrendering two runs and a walk to go with seven strikeouts.

Lacey senior Connor Rooney went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in defeat.

No. 6 Toms River East 3, No. 10 Toms River South 1

Senior right-hander C.J. Hirschy pitched a complete-game one-hitter on 83 pitches and the Raiders (1-0, 1-0) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and beat the crosstown rival Indians (0-1, 0-1) on opening day. Hirschy struck out five, recorded nine ground ball outs, walked two (one intentional) and hit two batters.

Toms River East scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth when Jon Meola doubled inside the third-base bag, and scored on a shallow single by Anthony Deblasio, who later scored on an RBI single to right by Tommy Vincent.

Toms River South took the lead when Russell Messler caught Hirschy asleep with a steal of home and the Raiders right-hander balked to make it easy on Messler, who would have been safe by a comfortable margin had there been no balk. Jerry Caporale broke a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI single in the fifth, while Toms River South junior Ryan Shiffer had the Indians' lone hit, a line drive single to right to lead off the second.

Brick 8, Southern 6

Senior Nick Zbranak went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Green Dragons (1-0, 1-0) to a win over the Rams (0-1, 0-1) on opening day. Junior Dan Berg went 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI for Brick, which put up six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead.

Senior Evan Lobato allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings to earn the win. Senior Nick Liantonio hit his first varsity home run for Southern in defeat.

 

Class B North

Freehold 5, Long Branch 1

Seniors Alex Mulhern and Zach Mulhern each went 2-for-3 in support of sophomore winning pitcher Steve Rullo as the Colonials (1-0, 1-0) topped the Green Wave (0-1, 0-1) for an opening-day win.  Alex Mulhern doubled and scored a run while Zach Mulhern scored and drove in a run. Senior John Bostic and junior Nick Belka each went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Freehold.

Rullo worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three. Senior Paul Tashian struck out three in two scoreless innings and junior Nick Murphy worked a scoreless ninth to nail down the win.

Class B Central

St. Rose 10, Keansburg 0

Senior right-hander Parker Haggerty threw a five-inning, three-hit shutout and four St. Rose players collected two hits apiece in the Purple Roses' (1-0, 1-0) opening-day win over the Titans (0-1, 0-1). Johnny Kussmaul, Matt Oujo, Will King and Travis Cloney each had two hits for St. Rose.

Point Beach at Asbury Park, PPD - TBD

Mater Dei Prep 5, Keyport 1

Senior Taylor Hardy pitched a seven-hit complete game with no walks and five strikeouts to help the Seraphs (1-0, 1-0) beat the Red Raiders (0-1, 0-1) for an opening-day win. Senior Sam Miles went 1-for-2 with three RBI, including a two-run double that capped a four-run fourth inning for Mater Dei Prep.

Vincenzo Mezzacappa tripled and Matt Eckert doubled for the Seraphs, while Steven Chandler drove in Keyport's lone run with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the fifth.

Henry Hudson 9, Ranney 6

Junior Kyle Rauen collected three hits and drove in a run to lead the Admirals (1-0, 1-0) to a slugfest win over the Panthers (0-1, 0-1). John Mejia doubled for one of his two hits and drove in a run for Ranney, while Henry Hudson freshman Brett Carlstrom earned his first career win on the mound.

 

Class B South

Pinelands 4, No. 8 Jackson Liberty 2

Junior Chad Astemborski allowed two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts over six innings and the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0) knocked off the defending B South champion and Shore Confernce Tournament runner-up to open the season. Senior catcher Vinny Bondinello went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple to highlight a four-run fourth inning for Pinelands against Jackson Liberty starter Howard Taylor.

Junior Patrick Spagnola also added an RBI single in the Pinelands fourth. Senior James Sofield doubled and scored the first of two Jackson Liberty runs in the top of the third. Dylan Millemann led Jackson Liberty's offense with a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

 

Non-Division

Howell 2, Monsignor Donovan 0

Senior John Monahan pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and four walks and the Rebels (1-0) scratched across enough offense to edge the Griffins (0-1) in the season opener. Seniors Mike Levy and Zach Loroesh each went 2-for-3 for Howell, with Loroesh driving in a run.

Russ Petranto accounted for the lone Monsignor Donovan hit with a single in the third. Sophomore Andre Jarvis took the hard-luck loss in his first varsity start, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings of work.

Matawan 22, Acedemy Charter 0

The Huskies (1-0) plated 15 runs in the second inning en route to an opening-day win over first-year program Academy Charter (0-1). Senior Justin Henderson and sophomore Adam Elliot each went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI and junior Joe Piscopo finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Elliot also scored three runs.

Nick Santuccio struck out five in two innings of work to earn the win.

Freehold Twp.7, Manchester 1

Each Freehold Township starter had at least one hit and the lineup combined for seven doubles in the Patriots' (1-0) opening-day win over the Hawks (0-1). Senior Chris Rose went 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while senior Steve Derby went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Senior Joe Decelie worked six innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Senior Devin Tomei had a double for Manchester in the loss.
