Opening Round

(19) St. Rose 8, (14) Raritan 4

J.P. Traynor hit a two-run double and Pat Fullman tossed four innings to lead the Purple Roses to a win over the Rockets, their 12th straight win. St. Rose will play third-seeded Red Bank Catholic in the round of 16.

 

Class A North

Freehold 2, No. 1 CBA 0

Steven Rullo threw a one-hitter to shut out CBA for the second time this season as the Colonials beat the Colts to sweep the regular-season series. Brandon Martorano singled in the bottom of the first inning and Rullo held CBA hitless over the final six frames.

Freehold scored both of its runs in the top of the third, with Chris Cassandra and Marco Meleo both reaching base and scoring in the rally.

Howell 8, Freehold Twp. 4

Connor Fey hit one of three Howell home runs and pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win to lead the Rebels to a win over the Patriots. Fey finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI on his solo blast.

Justi Steel hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to stretch Howell's lead to 8-4 and John Stratton also homered in a 2-for-3, three-RBI day at the plate.

John Carroll was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run for Freehold Township.

Manalapan 6, No. 5 Marlboro 0

Junior right-hander Tyler Stafflinger pitched six shutout innings and the bottom two hitters in the Manalapan order combined to go 4-for-5 with four RBI as the Braves beat the Mustangs for their ninth win in their last 10 games.

No. 9 hitter Mike Mollica was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI and No. 8 hitter Nick Surhoff went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior first baseman Jake Sadowitz also went 2-for-2 with an RBI and senior Ryan McGrane was 2-for-3 with two runs scored as part of Manalapan's 12-hit attack.

No. 6 Middletown South 4, Middletown North 2

Junior right-hander Austin Markmann threw a complete-game five-hitter and the Eagles beat the Lions for their ninth straight win and 11th in their last 12 games. He allowed one earned run, walked three and struck out four while also going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Junior Freddie Yahn hit a tie-breaking, two-out, two-strike, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to give Middletown South a 4-2 lead. Zach Schild finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Dave Mangarelli was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Tom Gannon also stole three bases while serving as the courtesy runner for Markmann.

T.J. Vivian went the distance for Middletown North in taking the hard-luck loss.

 

Class A Central

Rumson-Fair Haven 9, No. 10 St. John Vianney 3

Mickey Schluter and Max Goione each had a pair of hits and Morgan Maguire doubled in two runs to lead the Bulldogs to a win over the Lancers.

Anthony Mazzucca struck out nine and worked around 10 hits and three walks to allow two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Ciaran Devenney, Nick DeLuise and Nick Gugliara all went 2-for-4, with Devenney belting a solo home run for St. John Vianney.

Manasquan 5, Holmdel 1

Tommy Sheehan threw a complete-game two-hitter with four strikeouts and finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Warriors past the Hornets. Tyler Bradley also went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Ty Hawkins delivered an RBI single in Manasquan's three-run fourth inning.

Monmouth 12, Shore 8 (9 Innings)

Jimmy Green highlighted a four-run ninth inning with a two-run single and the Falcons survived a comeback by the Blue Devils to win in extra-innings.

Monmouth scored seven runs in the third inning to go on top 7-0. Matt Vincenti led off the inning with a solo home run and Bill Herman capped it with a two-run homer. Monmouth did not get another hit until the seventh, when the Falcons scored an unearned run to up their lead to 8-6.

Shore rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third and four in the fifth to close the gap to 7-6, then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by James Kelly and Matt McCarthy.

 

Class A South

Southern 5, Lacey 2

Joey Robertson hit a bases-clearing three-run double in a four-run fifth and Jared Lubanski struck out eight in a four-hit complete game as the Rams beat the Lions.

Anthony Elefante doubled for Lacey.

No. 8 Toms River South 5, Brick 2

Ryan Shiffer hit a three-run triple in a five-run Toms River South third inning and the Indians backed up winning pitcher Vinny Scrudato in a win over the Lions. Scrudato allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.

Shiffer finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while Anthony Carfora and Ray Liguori each added an RBI in the win. Dan Berg knocked in both Brick runs with a two-run double in the fifth.

 

Class B North

No. 3 Colts Neck 2, Matawan 1

Mario Ferraioli struck out eight in a three-hitter as the Cougars edged the Huskies to remain unbeaten in Class B North play.

Tyler Kapuscinski walked and scored on a two-out RBI single by Jordan Gonzalez in the sixth to give Colts Neck a 2-0 cushion. The Cougars scored on a Matawan error in the second inning.

Joe Piscopo doubled in the loss and Colin Thompson allowed only one earned run in a complete-game effort for Matawan.

Wall 8, Long Branch 1

No. 4 Red Bank Catholic 9, No. 9 Ocean 5

Mike Ianelli and Evan Madigan each had three hits and Eric Klimowicz earned his first win with 4 1/3 innings of relief as the Caseys kept pace with Colts Neck in the Class B North reace by beating the Spartans.

Ianelli was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Madigan finished 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Tom Merlo and Aaron Ahn each added a pair of hits, including a double each.

Anthony Bartolomei went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI, while Brian Olesen was 3-for-4 in the loss.

Red Bank 5, Neptune 4

Matt Santos struck out 11 over six innings and Claudio LoBraico led the offense by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored to help the Bucs edge the Scarlet Fliers.

Mike Hand finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for Neptune.

 

Class B Central

Mater Dei Prep 18, Asbury Park 6 (5 Innings)

Patric Donohue went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBI and four stolen bases to key the Seraphs in a win over the Blue Bishops.

Cole Hardy drove in three runs for Mater Dei in a 1-for-4 day at the plate. Calvin Simmons Carter was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Asbury Park, while Devin Nash-McGee was 1-for-3 with three RBI in the loss.

 

Class B South

Pinelands 9, Central 1

Dave DeFeo blasted two home runs, including a grand slam in the second inning, to support his own cause on the mound as the Wildcats pounded the Golden Eagles. DeFeo went the distance on the mound, allowing one unearned run on four hits and no walks while striking out eight. He finished with five RBI and two runs scored in the game and now has five home runs this season.

Mitch Merrill went 4-for-4 with a double, run scored, RBI and two stolen bases for Pinelands. Chris Burke also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.

Frank Rose finished 2-for-4 with a double to lead Central.
