Class A North

No. 8 Freehold Twp. 7, Marlboro 6

Cristian Corcione stroked the game-winning RBI single with two out in the bottom of the seventh and the Patriots (2-2, 2-1) rallied from a five-run deficit in the top of the first inning to walk off with a win over the Mustangs (2-2, 1-2). Corcione finished the game 2-for-3 and also scored a run.

Freshman Patrick Burns tied the game with a one-out RBI double in the seventh and it would have been the game-winner had Marlboro's relay from the left field not cut down the potential winning run at the plate. Burns finished 1-for-2 with three runs scored.

Senior Ryan Ford was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base for Freehold Township, while Brandon Smith also added an RBI double in the win. Kevin Goodman led off the seventh inning with a single and finished 1-for-3.

Three Patriots relievers combined for 6.1 innings in support of starter Bryan Reed, who lasted two-thirds of an inning. Vladimir Scriptunas, Zach Gorman and Nick Lodispoto combined to allow on earned run on three hits and three walks over the last six-plus innings.

Gorman struck out six, walked one and allowed a run on one hit in four strong innings to hold down the fort before Lodispoto pitched the final two to earn the win.

Anthony Brienza was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases to lead Marlboro, while Justin Levito and Gurkaran Singh accounted for the other two Mustangs hits in the game.

Joe Lomingino pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief for Marlboro and took the loss.

Class B North

No. 4 Wall 1, Middletown South 0

Junior right-hander Grant Shulman fired a three-hit shutout and drove in the game's lone run as the Crimson Knights (4-0, 3-0) blanked the Eagles (2-1, 2-1) to win their fourth straight game to open the season.

Shulman did not issue a walk and struck out eight while navigating through seven innings on just 78 pitches. He gave himself the only run of support he would need when he punched an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the first inning, chasing home junior shortstop Dylan Richey.

Junior Robby Zega went the distance and pitched a three-hitter of his own for Middletown South. He walked three and struck out six on 82 pitches.

Craig Larsen's base-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth chased home three runs and the Mariners (2-2) held on to beat the Rams (3-2) for a big non-conference win. The first two runs scored as a result of Larsen's hit while the third came in on a throwing error.

Toms River North took the lead earlier in the sixth on a tie-breaking squeeze bunt by Nick DeRose.
