No. 4 CBA 6, Middletown South 0

Sophomore Luca Dalatri tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and the Colts (1-0-1, 1-0-1) shut out the Eagles (1-1, 1-1) for their first win of the season after darkness ended their season-opener with Middletown North in a tie.

Dalatri also walked only one and allowed a single to Middletown South sophomore and starting pitcher Zach deRocco (0-1) with two out in the fourth. Junior Griffin Arnott went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple in the second inning and sophomore catcher Brandon Martorano added a two-run home run in the fourth. Dalatri also helped his cause by stroking two singles and driving in a run.

 

Class A Central

No. 5 St. John Vianney 11, No. 3 Red Bank Catholic 5

Senior right fielder Evan Pietronico gave St. John Vianney an early lead with a first-inning, two-run home run and the Lancers (3-0, 3-0) took advantage of eight Red Bank Catholic errors and beat the Caseys (2-1, 2-1) for the first time since the 2010 season. The win was also the 100th in the career of Vianney coach Mike Morgan, currently in his eighth year as head coach of the program.

St. John Vianney scored eight runs on seven RBC errors in the third inning alone. Senior Chris Morris went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Drew Fisher, Nick DeLuise and Pat Devenney each had two hits, with DeLuise scoring two runs.

Brendan Madigan and Matt Kurdewon each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Tom Merlo added a double and two runs scored for the Caseys.

 

Non-Division

Raritan 1, Manchester 0

Nick Glensor drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning and the Rockets (1-1) made a winner out of senior starter Bruce Strickland in a win over the Hawks (2-2). Strickland pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.

No. 2 Jackson Memorial 3, Manasquan 0

Sophomore Chris Hawryluk pitched a complete-game three-hitter and the Jaguars (2-1) blanked the Warriors (1-1). Hawryluk struck out five and walked none in his varsity debut.

Sophomore Kyle Johnson chased home junior Brandon Janofsky with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, junior Joe DeMaio singled home a run in the fifth and junior Rich Rountree added a pinch-hit, RBI single in the sixth to account for the Jackson scoring. Senior Matt Guarino also collected two hits, including a double, for the Jaguars.

Brick 10, Mater Dei Prep 0 (5 Innings)

Junior Dan Berg went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and the Green Dragons (2-1) rode the pitching of sophomore left-hander Nick Chirichello to a win over the Seraphs (1-2). Chirichello allowed three hits and one walk while striking out seven in four shutout innings.

Sophomore Steve Schrim also went 3-for-3 for Brick and senior Nick Zbranak went 1-for-2 with four RBI. Junior shortstop Carmen Sclafani rounded out the Brick standouts at the plate by going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base.

Shore 9, Long Branch 0

Senior shortstop Clayton Coffey went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and senior catcher Nick Blaney finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in support of winning pitcher Andrew Schulz, who pitched the Blue Devils (1-1) past the Green Wave (0-3) for their first win of the season.

Schulz allowed just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in five innings.

No. 10 Toms River South 11, No. 9 Central 5

Senior Russell Messler went 4-for-5 with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first and key a 16-hit attack as the Indians (2-1) beat the Golden Eagles (1-1). Messler added an RBI single in a two-run Toms River South second inning that gave the Indians the lead for good.

Toms River South broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, during which Spencer Kapp and Ryan Shiffer each hit two-run singles. Sophomore Trevor Wagner added an RBI double in the inning and finished 2-for-4.

Junior right-hander Vinny Scrudato (1-1) earned the win with 4 2/3 innings of relief. Scrudato allowed two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

Central jumped on top in the top of the first when senior Javon Hardy led the game off with a double and scored on an RBI single by junior Frank Rose. Senior Andrew DiPiazza added a solo blast in the seventh inning to cap the scoring.

Matawan at Marlboro - PPD, TBD

No. 1 Wall 5, Brick Memorial 4

Senior shortstop Chris Barcas plated the tying and go-ahead runs with a single in the top of the seventh and the Crimson Knights (2-0) edged the Mustangs (0-3) for a non-divisional win against the defending NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV runner up.

Senior Pat Franzoni went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple in a three-run fourth for Brick Memorial.

Wall junior Ryan Orender struck out seven and allowed a run on five hits in three innings to start the game. Senior Bobby Patterson pitched three innings of one-run ball to earn the win.

No. 7 Toms River North 12, No. 8 Jackson Liberty 2 (5 Innings)

Juniors Mike Tiplady and Joe Venditto stayed hot at the plate and the Mariners (3-0) gave starter Steve Slagmolen five first-inning runs en route to a five-inning win over the Lions (0-3).

Tiplady went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a triple to the wall in left-center, while Venditto went 2-for-3 with three RBI. In three games this season, Tiplady is 7-for-9 with a double, triple and four RBI, while Venditto is 7-for-9 with eight RBI. Both players are in their first year as varsity regulars.

Junior Kevin Blum also went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Senior Anthony Ferlise went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while sophomore Jeff Ciervo went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Slagmolen allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the win. Senior Dan Naif went 2-for-2 and seniors Joel Rivera and Dan Serreino each added a double for Jackson Liberty.

 

Non-Conference

Academy Charter at Lakewood, 10 a.m.

Holmdel 16, Carteret 5

Junior D.J. Goins went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a triple and five RBI and the Hornets (1-1) pounded the Ramblers for a non-conference win, Holmdel's first of the season. Sophomore Tyler Fischer added three hits and four RBI, while junior Ashwin Jain and senior Jack Flanagan also picked up three hits each.

Jeff Wischerath picked up the win for Holmdel.

Lacey 14, Pinelands 10

Senior shortstop Connor Rooney went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI to highlight a busy offensive day in a Lions (1-2) win over the Wildcats (1-2). Junior George Peddie also belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and senior Paul Lynch went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI, which came on a two-run single in a four-run Lacey fourth that gave the Lions the lead for good.

Senior Vinny Bondinello went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and junior Mitch Merrill was 2-for-3 with three runs scored for Pinelands. Junior David DeFeo also added a two-run double in the loss.
