Monmouth County Tournament - Bracket

Preliminary Round

(12) St. Rose 8, (21) Red Bank 3

Winning pitcher Riley Maypother was 2-for-4 with a two-run double during St. Rose's four-run fourth inning, which keyed a Purple Roses (10-3) win over the Bucs (5-6) in the MCT preliminary round.

Maypother also struck out 10 over five innings of work, during which he allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while throwing 91 pitches.

Will Gannon threw 44 pitches during a six-out save and struck out four during his scoreless, one-hit outing. Gannon also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Max Stamer and Michael Eulner each went 2-for-4 for Red Bank and Eulner drove in a run and also took the loss on the mound.

(11) Freehold Boro 4, (22) Middletown North 1

Dane Della Valle tossed a five-hitter and the Colonials (6-6) earned a trip to Count Basie Park to play RBC later in the afternoon by beating the Lions (3-11) in the MCT preliminary round. Della Valle surrendered an earned run, walked two and struck out five while throwing 90 pitches over his seven innings of work.

Nick Aiello doubled home two runs in the third inning and Dan Molina drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to highlight the Freehold Boro offense.

(2) CBA 3, (15) Ocean 1

Tommy DiTullio and Matt Fitzsimmons each singled home a run to back winning pitcher Nick Hohenstein and the Colts edged the Spartans in a game that was played under protest.

Mason Wolf also plated a run with a sacrifice fly and junior Joe Escandon struck out the final two batters he faced with the tying runs aboard in the seventh.

According to Ocean coach Cip Apicelli, with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third inning, his baserunner was doubled off at second base after a catch in the outfield, but the runner at third base successfully tagged up and scored before the ball reached second base. Apicelli argued that his runner at second also successfully tagged up, but protested that the run should count, as stated in the rule book below.

Update: According to a modification to this year's NJSIAA baseball rules, the NJSIAA does not recognize protests based on umpire misinterpretation and Ocean's protest is, therefore, denied and CBA will advance with a 3-1 win.
