Class A North

Marlboro 2, Manalapan 1

Senior left-hander Andrew Nardi pitched a five-hit complete game with eight strikeouts, and senior second baseman Jeremy Gerringer doubled twice and scored both Marlboro runs as the Mustangs (5-1, 3-1) topped the Braves (4-2, 1-2) to continue their fast start.

Gerringer doubled and scored on an RBI single by junior Chase Sandler that tied the game in the second inning and gave Marlboro the lead after he doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Will Trochiano moved Gerringer to third with a single.

Freehold 10, CBA 0 (6 Innings)

Junior Steve Rullo pitched a two-hit shutout over six innings and the Colonials made the most of eight hits to hammer the No. 1 Colts for their first Class A North win.

Sophomore Tom Holdorf went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and three RBI to lead Freehold's offensive attack. Senior Dante Cuzzolino and junior Nick Zuppe were each 2-for-3, with Zuppe knocking in two runs and scoring three while Cuzzolino scored once and drove in one.

 

Class A Central

Monmouth 9, Shore 6

Senior Matt Vincenti went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, including the game-winning RBI triple during a three-run sixth inning that lifted the Falcons (3-1, 2-0) to a win over the Blue Devils (2-3, 2-2).

Junior P.J. Mellaci started the sixth with a double for his first varsity hit and scored on the Vincenti triple. Senior Marc Marcinak and junior Chritian Hoplock each had two hits in the win, with Hoplock ripping a double for one of his hits.

Senior Bill Hermann threw three innings of relief to earn the win, highlighting his effort in the fifth inning, when Hermann entered the game with the bases loaded and no one out and wiggled out of trouble without surrendering a run.

Shore tied the game in the fifth on a three-run triple by senior Justin Halper - his second of two hits in the game - before Hermann eventually came in and put out the fire. Senior catcher Dhillon Barbetti had two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored for Shore and junior shortstop Michael O'Halloran went 3-for-4 with a double in the loss. Devin McLaughlin also added two hits for the Blue Devils.

St. John Vianney 4, Rumson-Fair Haven 2 (9 Innings)

Junior Dan Gesior ripped a game-tying, pinch-hit, two-run single with two out in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings and the Lancers (3-1, 2-1) scored two runs in the ninth on a wild pitch and a pickoff error to rally for a win over the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-2).

Rumson senior right-hander Morgan Maguire took a three-hit shutout and a two-run lead into the seventh before St John Vianney finally got to him. The inning started with a strikeout that got to the backstop and allowed Victor Jamandron to reach first base. Junior catcher Ciaran Devenney and senior third baseman Nick DeLuise each followed with a walk to load the bases with no one out before Maguire induced an infield popup for the first out.

The Lancers scored their first run on an RBI fielder's choice groundout by junior right fielder Zach Richards, who hit a ground ball to third base that Jackson Rissucci picked up before he tagged the third base bag and threw to first base too late to get Richards. Gesior then followed with the game-tying hit, a sharp ground ball to second that took a high, fast hop over the head of Rumson second baseman Sam Chandler and allowed DeLuise to score from second.

Rumson nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh when Maguire hit a long fly ball that cleared the outfield fence in right, but was caught by Richards to save the game. Richards then singled with two out in the ninth, moved to third on an error on a hard ground ball hit by Gesior, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. Gesior stole second and scored on an errant throw to third after he was caught in a rundown between second and third.

Rumson jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by junior first baseman Teddy Sourlis, which cleared the line of trees in right field and landed on the tennis courts. Sourlis finished 2-for-4.

 

Class A South

Toms River North 10, Brick 0 (5 Innings)

Ryan Larsen went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Mike Tiplady was 2-for-3 with two RBI to help lead the Mariners to a convicing win over the previously unbeaten Green Dragons (4-1, 3-1).

Junior Jeff Ciervo was 2-for-2 with a double off the right field wall and a run scored and junior Joey Rose was 1-for-3 with an RBI double off the fence in center. Senior right-hander Doug Molnar shut out Brick over five innings on three hits while striking out three.

Toms River South 7, Southern 2

Senior right fielder Jake Ryan homered for the third straight game and finished 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Indians (3-1, 3-1) to a win over the Rams (0-5, 0-4).

Ryan's three-run blast over the right-center field wall broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning, during which Toms River South scored five runs. Junior Anthony Carfora went 2-for-2 with two doubles and scored a run on an RBI single by sophomore Matt Shiffer in the five-run fifth.

Senior right-hander Chandler Thompson earned his first win of the season with four innings of relief. Thompson allowed an unearned run on six hits and a walk while striking out three. Ray Liguori extended his scoreless innings streak to 16 1/3 innings with a scoreless seventh, a streak that dates back to the 2014 season.

Junior Ronnie Velardi was 3-for-3 with a double for Southern.

 

Class B North

Red Bank 1, Neptune 0

Sophomore Matt Santos tossed a two-hit shutout with no walks and struck out 10 to lead the Bucs (1-4, 1-2) to a win over the Scarlet Fliers (0-5, 0-4) for their first victory of the season.

Justin Tucker allowed one unearned run on only three hits over six innings for Neptune in taking the hard-luck loss. Drew Cook reached on an error with two out in the second inning and scored on an RBI single by Claudio LoBraico.

Colts Neck 13, Matawan 0 (5 Innings)

Senior Tyler Kay went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored as the Cougars backed up starter Chris Murphy with a big offensive game in a win over the Huskies.

Senior Mario Ferraioli also went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and Nick Umbro also added a double and three RBI.

Murphy allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six in five scoreless innings.

Wall 17, Long Branch 0 (5 innings)

Senior Dan Wondrack hit a grand slam to highlight an eight-run second inning that propelled the Crimson Knights (3-2, 2-1) to a win over the Green Wave (1-4, 1-3). Jake Malone finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI, while Nick Martinez was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

 

Non-Division

Raritan at Manchester - PPD, TBD

Brick 3, Point Boro 0

Mike Soldo and Nic Chirichello combined on a five-hit shutout and the Green Dragons (4-0) won the first of their two games on Saturday, beating the Panthers (1-4) in the early game.

Soldo allowed three hits and struck out five in four innings for the win, while Chirichello saved the game by allowing two hits and striking out six in three innings. Dan Berg and Matt Greenberg each went 2-for-3 with a run scored, with Berg adding an RBI. Nick Moglia also added an RBI double for Brick.

St. Rose 4, Wall 3

Senior Travis Cloney delivered a two-out, two-run double to give St. Rose the lead in the bottom of the sixth and the Purple Roses (1-3) held on to knock off the Crimson Knights (2-2) for their first win of the season.

Senior Johnny Kussmaul drove in the first two St. Rose runs with a two-run single in the first inning. Senior Jason Criscuolo worked the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win after senior Patric Fullman went the first 5 2/3.

Freshman Riley Maypother started the sixth with a pinch-hit single for his first varsity hit and sophomore Brandon Mology dropped a sacrifice bunt to set up Cloney's hit. Dan Wondrack went 2-for-4 with two doubles to lead Wall.

Freehold Twp. 11, Jackson Memorial 10

Joe Silvestrone hit two more home runs, including the game-winning solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, to help the Patriots (3-2) slug their way past the Jaguars (1-4). Silvestrone also hit a solo blast in the first inning, giving him five home runs in his team's last two games. The senior catcher hit three home runs in a 14-11 loss to Manalapan on Wednesday.

Sophomore Mike Pirrotta went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBI for Freehold Township, while senior Kyle Fenton added a two-run double in the sixth inning. Junior Pete Gambino picked up the win in relief of junior starter Pete Nielsen, who worked the first six innings.

Senior catcher Nick Russo highlighted a four-run Jackson Memorial seventh inning with a game-tying RBI single to send the game to extra innings. Russo went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBI.

Senior Rich Rountree also went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run and three RBI for the Jaguars. Junior first baseman Chris Hawryluk also went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

 

Non-Conference

Brick Memorial 8, North Brunswick 5

Junior Tim Santiago hit his second home run of the season and junior Matt Cuppari went 2-for-3 with a triple, double and four RBI to lead the Mustangs (3-5) to a win over the Raiders. Cuppari inflicted most of his damage with a three-run double in the fifth.

Junir first baseman Brian Markoski went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored for Brick Memorial.

Williamstown 4, Pinelands 1

Dave DeFeo allowed two earned runs runs on four hits and four walks and struck out six over five innings, but the Wildcats (3-1) could not muster up enough offense and lost for the first time this season. Mitch Merrill and Austi Hartman each had a double for Pinelands.
