(1) CBA 3, (16) Middletown North 0

Senior right-hander Kenny Campbell pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks as the Colts downed the Lions. The lone blemish on Campbell's line was a hit batsman in the second inning.

Brandon Martorano singled home a CBA run in the first inning and later scored a run in the same inning.

(3) Howell 5, (14) St. Rose 4

Justin Steel homered for the second straight game and the Rebels pulled out a win over the Purple Roses to advance to the MCT quarterfinals. Steel and Connor Fey each finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, with Steel also adding a double and three RBI.

St. Rose transfer J.P. Traynor also went 1-for-3 with an RBI against his former team. Matt Furlong pitched 5 2/3 innings to earn the win and Troy Miller closed it out with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Brody Maypother belted his third homer of the season for St. Rose and finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

(4) Marlboro 10, (20) Rumson-Fair Haven 5

Brian Reilly was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Andrew Gambardello went 2-for-2 with two runs scored to help lead the Mustangs to a win over the Bulldogs to push into the quarterfinals against Middletown South. Gene Napolitano also went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Noah Hutter allowed four runs on four hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts to notch his first varsity win. Joe Pargament pitched the final two innings to earn the save in his first varsity appearance on the mound. He allowed one hit and struck out three without issuing a walk.

Danny Trocchia went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI to lead Rumson.

Freehold Township broke free for three runs in the top of the 13th inning and held on in the bottom of the inning to knock off the Cougars in a marathon round-of-16 game. Ryan Ford drew a base-loaded walk to break the 1-1 tie and Brian Oliver followed with an RBI infield single before an error scored the third run of the rally.

Ralph Gambino allowed one unearned run on three hits and four walks while striking out 11 in his eight innings of work. Mike D'Ottavio and Mario Ferraioli, meanwhile, combined to strike out 19 in 12 innings, with Ferraioli fanning 11 and walking two in 6 1/3 innings of two-hit relief.

(7) Ocean 11, (23) Holmdel 5

Jake Talarico pitched a complete game and drove in two runs to help the Spartans beat the Hornets and reach the quarterfinals at Red Bank Catholic. Jack D'Auria and Brian Kochenash each added two RBI, while Kenny Pickett added two hits and Brian Olesen picked up three.

Senior center fielder Cid Porter led the game off with the first home run of his career and Nick Hohenstein made three first-inning runs stand up with six strong innings on the mound as the Colts edged the Colonials to advance to the OCT semifinals.

Brendan Galvin drove home the second CBA run on a ground out and Kenny Campbell doubled home the third run of the game for the Colts. Mike Triandafellos delivered an RBI single in the fourth.

Dan Chiusano pitched all six innings for the Colonials.

Senior Evan Madigan went 3-for-4 at the plate, including the 100th hit of his career, as the Caseys beat the Spartans to advance to the MCT semifinals against No. 3 Howell.

John Pocchia allowed three runs in five-plus innings to earn the win and Jack Ipsen tossed a pair of scoreless innings for the save.

(3) Howell 5, (22) Freehold Twp. 4

Howell scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 3-3 stalemate and Connor Fey closed out the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in support of starter James Wynne as the Rebels survived a battle with the Patriots. Howell will advance to its first MCT semifinal since 1994, according to coach Eric Johnson, and will face No. 2 Red Bank Catholic.

Christian Gedell and Grant Hacket each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Troy Miller was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tom Scanlon and Wynne also drove in a run apiece for Howell, which benefitted from six Freehold Township errors that cost starter Mike Pirrotta four unearned runs.

Christian Corcione went 1-for-2 with an RBI double in Freehold Township's three-run second innings that staked the Patriots to a 3-2 lead. He finished with two RBI and Matt Gorman went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the loss.

(5) Middletown South 4, (4) Marlboro 0

Senior left-hander Ian Scheuer pitched a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts and two walks and Austin Markmann drove in a pair of runs to pace the Eagles to their 10th straight win by beating the Mustangs. Middletown South advances to the MCT semifinals against top-seeded CBA.

Jone Martin finished 2-for-2 at the plate and Zach Schild and Tom Gannon each went 2-fr-3 in the win.

Noah Thomas picked up two of Marlboro's three hits off Scheuer in a 2-for-3 game at the plate. Donnie Alfano pitched all seven innings and scattered nine hits and three walks while striking out four in defeat.

Josh Yates hit a game-tying single in the top of the seventh and Kevin Donnelly followed two batters later with the go-ahead RBI single as the Garnet Gulls rallied to knock off the Jaguars, who lost for the eighth time in nine games after a 5-0 start to the season.

 

(8) Barnegat 2, (9) Pinelands 0

Jason Groome fired a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts in his return to action from a 19-day absence as the Bengals beat the Wildcats to advance to Sunday's OCT quarterfinals. Groome was ruled ineligible for the first 30 days of the season by the NJSIAA for violating the state's transfer rules upon returning to his hometown school this school year.

Groome also walked three batters and threw 97 pitches while topping out at 94 miles-per-hour with his fastball.

Barnegat scored both its runs in the bottom of the third, first on an infield single by Collin O'Conner and on a double-steal on which Pinelands starter Noah Dean threw the ball away, allowing Aaron McLaughlin to scored from third. McLaughlin finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Brad O'Brien and Ryan Ross each singled off Groome, still considered by most industry experts as the top player available in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft. Freshman Joey Ventresca also drew a pair of walks against Groome.

(2) Brick Memorial 3, (15) Southern 0

Alec Merritt pitched a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and four walks and the Mustangs blanked the Rams to advance to the OCT quarterfinals on Sunday. Brian Markoski went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Nick Reyes was 1-for-2 with a two-run single in the first inning.

Jared Lubanski went the distance for Southern, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one.

(5) Jackson Liberty 5, (12) Manchester 0

Sophomore Matt Pickus pitched a five-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks and the Lions topped the Hawks to advance to Sunday's OCT quarterfinals at No. 4 Toms River North.

Jackson Liberty broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run single by Brandon Pallante that made the score 4-0. Ryan Van Wickle added an RBI single in the inning and Kenny Pommerencke and Billy Hart each drove in a run in the inning as well.

Senior left-hander Nic Chiricello fired a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and one walk to lead the Green Dragons to a win over the Raiders. Brick will take on No. 2 Brick Memorial in the quarterfinals, which are scheduled for Sunday.

Matt Stadelberger was 2-for-3 a double and an RBI single in the fourth that scored Cole Groschel to open the scoring. Pat McAlinden added an RBI single in the fifth that scored A.J. Serrino.

Nick DeGennaro went the distance for Toms River East in the hard-luck loss.

(1) Point Boro 5, (16) Donovan Catholic 0

Mike Falconetti and Frank Graziano combined on a two-hit shutout and Thomas Paul drove in three runs to lead the Panthers to a win over the Griffins. Point Boro will host Class B South rival Barnegat in the OCT quarterfinals on Sunday.

Falconetti allowed one hit in five scoreless frames and Graziano closed out the game with two innings, during which he struck out four.

Paul singled home a run in the fourth and doubled in two in the fifth that gave Point Boro a 5-0 lead. Pat Feehan also added a two-run single for the Panthers.
