Class A North

Middletown North 10, Howell 5

Kyle Capo, Walter Schopf and Anthony Vetrano each went 3-for-4 and the Lions (3-0, 2-0) topped the Rebels (2-1, 2-1) for their third straight win to open the season. Capo doubled, scored two runs and drove in two more for Middletown North, while Vetrano scored three runs and Schopf scored two and drove one in.

Freshman Tyler Ras also went 1-for-3 with two RBI in the win and struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief. Chuck Estelle allowed three runs in four innings to earn the win.

Senior Connor Boyle went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and junior Justin Steel was 3-for-4 with a double for Howell. Junior James Wynne also went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI.

No. 9 Marlboro 3, Freehold 2

Senior left-hander Andrew Nardi allowed one earned run in a five-hit complete game to lead the Mustangs to their third straight win to open the season by beating the Colonials (2-2, 0-2). Nardi struck out five and walked one for his second win of the year.

Junior first baseman Brian Reilly ripped a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fourth inning to give Marlboro a 2-0 lead and also doubled in the top of the seventh. Senior Phil Saglietto also went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while junior Matt Discuillo added a double as well.

Junior Nick Zuppi went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Freehold Boro. Sophomore Dan Chiusano also pitched a complete game in a losing effort, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts.

No. 1 CBA 9, Freehold Twp. 4

Senior first baseman John Moschella went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and five RBI to headline a 15-hit attack as the Colts (4-0, 1-0) rolled past the Patriots (2-1, 1-1) for their first Class A North win of the season. Eight of CBA's nine starters in the batting order had at least one hit in the win and the Colts broke the game open with four runs in the top of the fifth to make it 6-1.

Senior second baseman Andrew Buccellatto went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, while junior catcher Brandon Martorano was 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs. Junior Kenny Campbell allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out six to earn the win.

Senior Kyle Fenton and sophomore Mike Pirotta each went 2-for-2 for Freehold Township, with Fenton adding a double.

 

Class A Central

Raritan 8, No. 8 Manasquan 3

Senior right-hander Mike Kelleher scattered eight hits and struck out nine to pitch a complete game and lead the Rockets (2-1, 1-1) to a win over the Warriors. Sophomore Ryan Ruziecki and juniors Jon Rodriguez and Bo Bentley each had two hits apiece and junior Mason Sheehan added a solo home run in the top of the third to stake Raritan to a 7-0 lead.

Ruziecki was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, Bentley went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Seniors Matt Edwards and Ty Hawkins each had an RBI double and two hits for Manasquan.

St. John Vianney 10, Holmdel 5

Junior Victor Jamandron went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the St. John Vianney offense as the Lancers topped the Hornets. Nick DeLuise, Sebi Bellone and Zack Richards each doubled, with DeLuise driving in two runs and Bellone and Richards each plating two.

Chris Cerniglia also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Nick Gugliara was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases for St. John Vianney.

Ashwin Jain, Michael Carranante and Tyler Kiss each went 2-for-4 for Holmdel, and Will Van Name finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Shore 8, Rumson-Fair Haven 2

Junior Devin McLaughlin allowed one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out four to earn his first varsity win as the Blue Devils (2-1, 2-0) used a six-run second inning to top the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1). McLaughlin also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate.

Senior Justin Halper led the offensive attack by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Senior Alex Mango was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and senior Matt McCarthy finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Juniors Max Pfrang and Jackson Rissucci each doubled for Rumson, while senior Morgan Maguire finished 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

 

 

Class B North

Long Branch 6, Red Bank 0

Senior Travis Carroll pitched a three-hit shutout and went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Green Wave (1-2, 1-1) to a win over the Bucs (0-3, 0-2). Carroll also struck out eight in picking up his first win of the season.

Senior catcher Nick Conklin went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and a run scored while Sean Cuddy also finished 2-for-2 with two RBI. Senior Anthony Brier also knocked in two runs for Long Branch, which plated five runs in the first inning.

Matawan 2, No. 6 Wall 1

Junior right-hander Anthony Hirujo allowed one run on eight hits over six innings and junior Colin Thompson worked a scoreless seventh as the Huskies (1-2, 1-1) edged the defending division champion Crimson Knights (1-1, 1-1). Hirujo did not walk a batter and struck out two, while Thompson struck out the final batter of the game to strand two runners.

Junior Dylan Dobbin drove in the deciding run with a two-out RBI single in the third inning after Alex Cella scored on an error in the bottom of the second to stake Matawan to a 1-0 lead.

Red Bank Catholic 10, Neptune 0 (5 Innings)

Junior Justin Liggett pitched a three-hit shutout and five Red Bank Catholic players had two hits as the Caseys (2-0, 2-0) coasted to a win over the Scarlet Fliers (0-3, 0-2). Liggett struck out three in the complete-game win.

Evan Madigan, Doug Facendo, Mike Ianelli, Chris Bender and Dom Caraballo each recorded two hits for RBC. Madigan finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Facendo was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Caraballo went 2-for-2 with three RBI.

 

Class B Central

Mater Dei Prep 16, Keansburg 8

Junior Joe Ruth went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI as the Seraphs (2-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 15-0 lead in their first three turns at the plate en route to a win over the Titans (1-1, 1-1). Senior Vincenzo Mezzacappa added a triple and two RBI, while Patric Donohue chipped in three hits with a double and two RBI.

Senior Liam Olausen allowed six hits over 4 2/3 innings while striking out six to earn the win. Junior Ian Terry tripled and drove in three runs during a three-hit game for Keansburg.

 

Non-Division

No. 4 Colts Neck 10, St. Rose 4

Senior Tyler Kapuscinski went 2-for-2 with three walks, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base and the Cougars (3-0) pulled away to beat the Purple Roses (0-2).

Senior right fielder Tyler Kay went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, including a two-run single in a four-run first that cleared the bases thanks to a throwing error that pushed across the third run. Junior center fielder Mike Antico also went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two stolen bases, third baseman Jordan Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with two run scored, and senior second baseman Sam DeVitis finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Catcher Jeremy Slad also went 1-for-1 with two walks for the Cougars. Senior left-hander Mario Ferraoili allowed three runs on three hits over four innings to pick up the win and also knocked in a run with an RBI single in the first. Senior left-hander Chris Murphy pitched three scoreless innings for the save, striking out five while allowing three base-runners on a single, a hit-by pitch and a walk.

Senior Travis Cloney went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead the St. Rose offense.

Brick Memorial 11, St. Petersburg (Fla.) 1

Senior Matt Cathey tripled and drove in three runs and James Donlon, Matt Cuppari and Nick Matteo each had two hits as the Mustangs (1-3) rolled to their first win of the season.

Donlon finished 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, Cuppari was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, and Matteo was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior Tim Santiago also added a double and an RBI in the win.

Senior Ian Ambrose allowed a run on four hits over four innings to earn the win.

Non-Conference

Manalapan 8, Fayetteville-Perry (Oh.) 1

Nick Serra, Matt Klepper and Stephen Hansen combined to strike out 13 batters and the Braves offense backed them up to win their second straight in Fla.. Hansen also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and two RBI.

Junior Carmen Raione was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored for Manalapan (2-1), while classmate Jake Sadowitz also finished 2-for-2 with two RBI.
