Neptune 7, Howell 5

The Scarlet Fliers scored six runs in the top of the sixth to back starter Justin Tucker and beat the Rebels on opening day. Tucker struck out seven and allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in five innings while also going 1-for-4 with an RBI out of the leadoff spot.

Sophomore catcher Devon Furges went 1-for-2 with a triple, two walks and an RBI, while sophomore Sebastian Jno-Baptiste was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Junior Matt Bonderant added a 2-for-3 game with a run scored.

Senior Dylan Taliaferro allowed one run over two innings to close the game out.

Junior Nick Ruszczyk tripled and drove in a run for Howell, while Rebels starter Mike Walsh allowed one unearned run in five innings of work before exiting upon completing the fifth.

CBA 1, No. 6 Freehold Boro 0

Junior right-hander Nick Hohenstein pitched a complete game shutout and drove in the game's lone run with an RBI double to carry the Colts to an opening-day win over the Colonials.

Hohenstein took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with four strikeouts and two walks. His fourth-inning double plated sophomore Tommy DiTullio, who doubled ahead of Hohenstein.

Senior left-hander Dan Chiusano took the hard-luck loss while pitching a three-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk.

The Braves socked four home runs, three in a six-run sixth inning, as part of a 14-hit attack that propelled them to a win over the Cougars on opening day. Junior Dan DeBlasio belted a solo home run in the fifth to give Manalapan a 4-2 cushion and Steven Bullen, Giovanni Ciaccio and Jack Schweitzer all went deep in the sixth. Bullen and Ciaccio both hit two-run homers and Schweitzer's was a solo blast.

Senior right-hander Jeremy Bello pitched a two-hit shutout on only 72 pitches and the Mustangs edged the Patriots for an opening-day win.

Sophomore Vin Ferrigno delivered a two-run single in the fourth to score sophomore Justin Kapuscinski and junior Justin Levito with the only two runs of the game. Kapuscinski finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Senior Mike Pirrotta allowed two runs on four hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings for Freehold Township. He threw 92 pitches in the loss.

Mike Trapani tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth and Matawan grabbed the lead for good on an RBI double by senior Tom Collazo.

Junior Brendon Doherty dropped in a single to shallow left field to chase home the winning run  with two out in the bottom of the seventh and the Lions won a back-and-forth affair with the rival Eagles.

Middletown North entered the final frame trailing 3-2 and tied the game when sophomore Jason Timmons drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error on a ball hit by senior Marc Cerbo, who went to second on the error. Cerbo then advanced to third on a passed ball and Middletown South right-hander John Martin responded by striking out Nick Donato, who fouled off a bunt attempt with two strikes.

Martin then walked the next two batters to load the bases for Doherty, with lofted a 2-1 fastball from Martin between the left-fielder and shortstop Aurellio Licata, who got a glove on the ball as he was racing into shallow left field.

Middletown South took the lead by scoring three runs off junior right-hander and Alabama commit Tyler Ras in the sixth inning. Junior starting pitcher Joe Sprake hit a soft line drive over a drawn-in infield to score senior Ryan Ruziecki and break up the shut out and Licata tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate pinch-runner Scott Benigno. Ruziecki reach on an infield single to lead off and senior Ben Porpora drew a six-pitch walk before giving way to the pinch runner.

Courtesy runner Jeff Lewandowski stole second base with two out and sophomore Robby Zega hit a pop up into shallow left that was dropped, allowing Lewandowski to score the go-ahead run.

Mike Mercier and Cerbo checked in with RBI singles to stake Middletown North to a 2-0 lead.

 

Ocean 8, No. 9 Manasquan 1

Senior left-hander Jake DeMarco struck out 12 in a three-hit complete game and the Spartans defeated Notre Dame commit Tommy Sheehan and the Warriors on opening day.

Ocean scored all eight of its runs in the fifth inning, which included two-run singles by junior Matt Redbord and junior Jake Papa and two-run singles by DeMarco and junior David Yatcilla.

Sheehan allowed departed with runners on the corners and none out in the fifth and struck out 10 in four-plus innings of work.

Monmouth 3, Wall 1

Senior Josh Jackson doubled twice and drove in two to back sophomore pitcher Dante Ciaramella and the Falcons picked up a win over the Crimson Knights. Ciaramella allowed six hits and a walk over seven innings and struck out five during his 91-pitch effort.

Freshman Teddy Sharkey struck out six in his high school debut, but took the loss with three earned runs in three innings. Ryan Napolitano pitched four shutout innings with four strikeouts to keep Wall in the game.
