No. 1 CBA 1, No. 9 Marlboro 0 (8 Innings)

Senior right fielder Will Morgan lined a game-winning RBI single to deep right field with two out in the bottom of the eighth to give the Colts (5-0, 2-0) a win over the Mustangs (4-1, 2-1) in a battle of Class A North unbeatens.

The extra-inning run made a winner out of sophomore Mason O'Mara, who pitched a scoreless eighth in relief of junior Luca Dalatri. Marlboro senior center fielder Mike Santaromita hit an infield single into the hole at shortstop with runners on first and second in the eighth, but after picking the ball up with a back-handed stop, CBA shortstop Matt D'Angelo ran the ball over to tag runner Chase Sandler, who agressively rounded the base with the intention of scoring if the ball got through.

Dalatri took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed the first Marlboro hit to Phil Saglietto with two out in the inning. On the previous at-bat, Will Morgan took away a potential base hit by senior second baseman Jeremy Gerringer with a diving play coming in on a line drive. Dalatri walked one and struck out 11 while eclipsing the 90-pitch mark.

 

Class A South

Southern at No. 7 Toms River South - PPD, Saturday, 6 p.m.

Lacey 4, No. 2 Jackson Memorial 3

Sophomore Don Zellman pitched a complete-game five-hitter and Anthony Ruggiero and Paul Carluccio each went 2-for-4 to lead the Lions (3-2, 2-2) to a win over the Jaguars (1-3, 1-3). Carluccio doubled twice and drove in a run, while Ruggerio drove in two for Lacey.

Mater Dei Prep at Point Beach - PPD, TBD

Keansburg at St. Rose - PPD, Friday, 11 a.m.

Keyport 7, Ranney 1

Sophomore Christian Smith and junior Steven Chandler combined on a four-hitter and the middle of the Red Raiders (2-2, 2-2) order delivered six hits to help Keyport top the Panthers (0-2, 0-2).

Chandler went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, followed by junior Kyle Mitchell with a 2-for-3 game with two runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Kyle Johnson also went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while senior Rob Hila finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Kiran Shah doubled and scored a run to highlight the Ranney offense.

 

Class B South

Non-Division

No. 6 Wall 5, Jackson Liberty 2

Senior right-hander Ryan Orender worked five innings, doubled and scored a run as the Crimson Knights pulled out a win thanks to three late errors by the Lions. Junior Joe Casteluccia singled in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on an error. Wall added two more runs in the seventh on two more Jackson Liberty errors.

Orender struck out five and allowed two runs on five hits in his five frames. He doubled and scored in the fourth to make it 2-0 after Wall took a 1-0 lead on an errant pickoff throw that allowed junior MIke Yard to score from third.

Ryan Van Wickle and Dylan Milleman each singled and scored on fielder's choice ground outs, Van Wickle in the fourth and Milleman in the fifth. Senior right-hander Howard Taylor allowed one earned run on seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings in the loss. Taylor also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

 

Non-Conference

Donovan Catholic 11, Paideia (Fla.) 2

Junior Kyle Malloy pitched a seven-hit complete game and sophomore Mike Marron drove in four runs to lead the offense as the Griffins (3-1) won their Florida finale. Malloy walked one and struck out three.

Marron finished 2-for-4 with three-run triple in a five-run Donovan Catholic third inning, which followed a two-out RBI single in a three-run first. Senior Russ Petranto was 3-for-5 with three-runs scored and senior Matt Drake opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first.

 

At Tampa, Fla.

Brick Memorial 10, Landstown (Va.) 9

Junior shortstop Matt Cuppari capped a big week at the plate in Florida by going 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases as the Mustangs (2-5) rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-9 lead and held on for the win. During the Florida trip, Cuppari went 6-for-14 with two doubles and seven runs scored.

Junior Dylan Nolan hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth for his first varsity hit to higlight the inning. Dylan Evans, Matt Cathey and Tim Santiago all finished 2-for-3, with Evans and Santiago each driving in a pair of runs. Evans also scored three runs and stole three bases, while Cathey scored two runs and drove in another.

Chris Sullivan earned his first varsity win by recording the final two outs of a nine-run fourth inning by Landstown and D.J. Wilson picked up his first career save by pitching three scoreless innings of one-hit relief.

 

At Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Ocean 8, Niles McKinley (Oh.) 3

Junior Brian Olesen collected two hits and two RBI and senior Sam Maxwell worked five innings for a win in hi first varsity start as the Spartans (6-0) rolled to their sixth straight win to open the season. Ocean scored seven runs in the fourth inning to seize control of the game.

Maxwell scattered six hits, walked two and struck out four while allowing two earned runs. Junior Marc Chernin added two hits and an RBI, while junior Jake Talarico and Anthony Bartolomei each had a hit and an RBI. Sophomore Travis Lillie worked the final two innings for his first varsity action.
