New for this winter season, the United States Army and Shore Sports Network will be selecting a wrestling Team of the Week based on its performance over the past weekend.

The recipient of the Army Strong Team of the Week for the week of Jan. 22 to Jan. 28 is Long Branch, which clinched the Class B North division title and finished third in the team standings at the inaugural Shore Conference Individual Championships. Shore Sports Network and a representative from the United States Army were at practice Tuesday to present the Green Wave and head coach Dan George with a special banner to commemorate their accomplishments.

Long Branch's lone dual meet of the week was a 73-6 win over Manasquan which officially clinched the Class B North division title. The heavy lifting was done earlier in the season with wins over Middletown North and Ocean. The title is the 23rd division championship for Long Branch in program history and its fourth in the last six seasons.

The Green Wave then moved on to the Shore Conference Tournament where senior Pete Wersinger captured the 195-pound championship to lead Long Branch to a third-place finish in the team standings behind St. John Vianney and Howell. Sophomore Ryan Zimmerman finished second at 113 pounds, junior Kevin Cerutti placed second at heavyweight and senior Louie Saez finished fourth at 160 pounds despite being seeded 12th.

Long Branch is the No. 1 seed in the Central Jersey Group 4 tournament and started its bid for a state championship with a 61-9 victory over Burlington Township. The Green Wave will host fourth-seeded Colts Neck in the semifinals on Wednesday night. Long Branch is looking to win its first state sectional title since 2013 and its first group title since 2010.
