Pagano's hiring, which was first reported by The Asbury Park Press, was made official on Tuesday night. Schelmay, 61, retired in the fall after having led the Mariners to the No. 1 ranking in the Shore last spring and the Ocean County and Shore Conference Tournament titles. Schelmay had 346 wins over 20 years, which included four division titles, three NJSIAA sectional championships, two Ocean County Tournament titles and a pair of SCT titles as well as one trip to the Group IV final.

Pagano had served as the interim coach since Schelmay stepped down before officially being named to the position on Tuesday. He was part of the 1997 team that reached the Group IV final and has been a top assistant for the Mariners during a strong run in the last five years.
