NFL

---The Eagles took their first loss, 24-23 to the Lions, but defensive end Vinny Curry (Neptune) was solid in defeat with 4 tackles, a sack and two quarterback hits for Philly.

---The Raiders are living up to the preseason hype at 4-1 after beating the Chargers 34-31. Rookie Shilique Calhoun (Middletown North) had a pair of tackles in the win.

---Tight end Neal Sterling (Manasquan/Monmouth Univ.) and the Jacksonville Jaguars were on their bye week, giving him time to make fun of Rutgers losing to Michigan by 78 points. The Jaguars play the Bears in Chicago next Sunday.

---Long-snapper Clark Harris (Southern/Rutgers) and the Bengals lost 28-14 to the Cowboys.

---Tight end Tim Wright is on the injured list for the Detroit Lions, so the former Rutgers standout took the time to check out his alma mater, Wall, on Friday night, in the Crimson Knights' comeback win over Red Bank Catholic.

COLLEGE

---Wide receiver Keith Kirkwood (Neptune) had 4 catches for 83 yards in Temple's 34-27 loss to Memphis on Thursday night on ESPN. Linebacker Chapelle Russell (Lakewood) had 5 tackles for the Owls.

---Tight end Mike Gesicki (Southern) had 4 catches for 29 yards and scored the game's first touchdown in Penn State's 38-14 win over previously unbeaten Maryland. Linebacker Manny Bowen (Barnegat) had 6 tackles for the Nittany Lions and defensive end Garrett Sickels (Red Bank) had a sack and a booming hit that forced an interception. Wide receiver Saeed Blacknall (Manalapan) did not have a catch but did return from injury for his first action for Penn State since the season opener.

---Defensive lineman Pat Toal (Raritan) had a tackle in Old Dominion's 36-16 win over UMass. Kicker Mike Caggiano (Manalapan) booted a pair of extra points in the loss for the Minutemen.

---Central Michigan sophomore safety Otis Kearney (Toms River South) tied for the team high with 10 tackles in a 24-21 win over Ball State.

---Sophomore fullback Anthony Gargiulo (Colts Neck) is a member of the Navy team that stunned undefeated Houston, 46-40, for the eye-opening win of the weekend in college football. Gargiulo did not see action in the game.

---Defensive back Ikie Calderon (Neptune) had 10 tackles for Eastern Michigan in a 35-20 loss to Toledo.

---It was another frustrating day for starting offensive lineman Quenton Nelson (Red Bank Catholic) and Notre Dame, which lost 10-3 to N.C. State in a hellacious rainstorm.

---Defensive back Jaheem Woods (Neptune) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week after finishing with 10 tackles, a clutch interception in the fourth quarter that set up the game-winning score, a forced fumble, a tackle for a loss and a huge tackle on fourth down late in the game in Stony Brook's 27-20 win over Towson.

Woods' teammate in Stony Brook's defensive backfield, Tyrice Beverette (Lakewood), also made his presence felt with 9 tackles, an interception and a pass break-up.

---Running back Matt Gudzak (Toms River East) had 8 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown and tight end Ryan Morris (Barnegat) had one catch for 9 yards as Villanova rolled to a 35-0 win over Rhode Island to move to 5-1. Slot receiver Sam Shaud (Rumson-FH) and tight end Simon Bingelis (Brick) also saw action for the Wildcats but did not register a catch.

---Tight end Jordan Powell (Lacey) had 2 catches for 17 yards in New Hampshire's 13-10 win over Elon.

---Tim O'Hara (Red Bank Catholic) started at left tackle for Lehigh in its 45-31 win over Colgate.

---Monmouth University routed Howard, 59-20, to improve to 4-2 as safety Mike Basile (Brick Memorial) had 5 tackles, including one for a loss, Manny Maragoto (Freehold Twp.) had 3 tackles, defensive lineman Dimitrius Smith (Jackson Mem.) had 2 tackles, including one for a loss, Matt Castronuova (Jackson Memorial) had a tackle and a 7-yard punt return, and defensive lineman Adam Kakar (Toms River North) was in on a tackle for a loss. Wide receiver Vinny Grasso (Donovan Catholic) added a 30-yard catch.

Monmouth's starting offensive line also features right guard Peter Righi (Rumson-FH) and left guard Ryan Wetzel (Colts Neck). 

Freshman Matt Mosquera (Middletown South) averaged 35 yards on two punts, dropping one inside the 20, and also went 6-for-6 on extra points for his first collegiate action after an injury to starter Matt White. He was named the Big South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

---Redshirt freshman defensive back Josh Taylor (St. John Vianney) had a pair of tackles for Marist in a 30-21 win over Butler.

---Defensive lineman Kyle Mullen (Manalapan) had two tackles and a pass break-up to help Yale pick up its first victory with a 21-13 win over Dartmouth. Defensive end Nick Tomkins (Matawan) had 4 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in the loss for Dartmouth.

---Senior tight end Anthony Firkser (Manalapan) had 8 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown as Harvard knocked off Cornell, 29-13, in the Ivy League.

---Sophomore running back Charlie Volker (Rumson-FH) had a team-high 88 yards on 23 carries behind an offensive line that includes Reily Radosevich (Manalapan) as Princeton beat Georgetown 31-17.

---Wide receiver Joey Fields (Donovan Catholic) had 3 catches for 39 yards in Central Connecticut State's 28-16 loss to the University of Pennsylvania.

---Freshman running back Chad Freshnock (Middletown North) had 5 carries for 21 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and quarterback Matt Muh (Shore Regional) went 18-for-25 for 202 yards in Bucknell's 21-20 win over Holy Cross. Marcus Ademilola (Jackson Mem.) added a pair of tackles and Doug Whitlock (Red Bank Catholic) had a tackle for a loss in the win.

---Defensive end Shawn McCord (Red Bank Catholic) had a tackle in a 24-10 win by St. Francis (Pa.) over Robert Morris.

---Wide receiver Robbie Cantelli (Holmdel) had 2 catches for 40 yards and a touchdown as Fordham exploded in a 58-34 win over Lafayette. Linebacker Brett Lambert (Holmdel) added a tackle in the win. Wide receiver Tim Vangelas (Colts Neck) had 2 catches for 15 yards in the loss for Lafayette. Also in that game, Fordham running back Chase Edmonds went nuclear for a league-record 359 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns.

---Quarterback Steve Cluley (Wall) was 14-for-27 for 157 yards, a touchdown and an interception and also ran for 52 yards and a touchdown in William & Mary's 31-24 loss to James Madison. Wide receiver Ishmael Hyman (St. John Vianney) had a 21-yard catch in the win for James Madison.

---Defensive back Darrius Hart (Toms River South) had 6 tackles and a pass break-up in Maine's 28-21 win over Delaware.

---Linebacker Dan Loizos (Ocean) had a team-high 10 tackles, 1.5 for a loss in Ithaca's 50-27 win over Hartwick.

---Quarterback Alex Thomson (Keyport) was 10-for-24 for 149 yards passing and a touchdown and defensive back Jesse Flaherty (Red Bank Catholic) had a pair of tackles in Wagner's 15-13 loss to Columbia.

---Defensive end Nick Pydeski (Raritan) had a tackle in Springfield's 17-3 win over Union.

---Linebacker David Gutzmore (Neptune) had 5 tackles in Seton Hill's 27-23 win over Clarion.

---Running back Dahmiere Willis (Long Branch) had 3 carries for 5 yards in American International's 19-0 win over Stonehill. In the loss, running back Mike Cordova (Red Bank Catholic) had 16 carries for 79 yards and defensive lineman Xavier Young (Barnegat) made a pair of tackles.

---Senior defensive lineman Richie Curran (Red Bank Catholic) had 5 tackles for St. Anselm in a 63-20 loss to LIU-Post. Sophomore Neil Horenburg (Red Bank Catholic) also starts at center for St. Anselm.

---Senior quarterback Ajee Patterson (Neptune) continues to shine for New Haven, as he went 20-for-32 for 279 yards and a touchdown in a 45-14 win over Merrimack. Senior defensive lineman Ari Nwobi (Jackson Liberty) added 4 tackles and freshman defensive back Jeff Sheard (St. John Vianney) had 3 tackles in the win.

---Myles Martin (Neptune) had 7 tackles, 1.5 for a loss, and two pass break-ups for Pace University in a 35-16 loss to Southern Connecticut.

---It was a big weekend for a pair of Shore grads at FDU-Florham. Sophomore defensive back Liam Casey (St. John Vianney) was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week with 9 tackles, 2 for a loss, a sack, an interception and two forced fumbles in a 24-21 win over Lycoming. Also, freshman kicker/punter Nick Maciejewski (Wall) was named the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week after booting the game-winning field goal from 19 yards as time expired.

---Quarterback Riley Sullivan (Raritan) ran 6 times for 16 yards, running back Khani Glover (Jackson Mem.) had 6 carries for 10 yards, linebacker James Bedell (Shore Regional) had a pair of tackles and defensive linemen Erik Graham (Shore Regional) and Grant Castellanos (Manasquan) each had a tackle in The College of New Jersey's 41-0 loss to Wesley.

---Defensive back Pat Moran (Barnegat) had 12 tackles and junior wide receiver Tyler Vivian (Shore Regional) had 2 catches for 48 yards for William Paterson in a 23-0 loss to Frostburg State.

---Senior running back John DiStefano (Red Bank Catholic) rolled up 175 yards rushing and a touchdown on a whopping 41 carries to power Montclair State's 17-0 win over Southern Virginia. DiStefano leads the NJAC in rushing with 633 yards. Wideout Julanee Prince (St. John Vianney) added one catch for 28 yards and fullback Anthony Dorsi (Red Bank Catholic) had one catch for 7 yards in the win. Defensive lineman Jake Weber (Matawan) had 6 tackles to help get the shutout.

---Running back Nick Cella (Red Bank Catholic) had 14 carries for 28 yards in Rensselaer's 21-17 win over Hobart.

---Linebacker Chris Noesges (Manalapan) had 3 tackles in Rowan's 34-20 win over Salisbury University.

---Defensive lineman Joe Odebode (Toms River South) had a tackle and recovered a fumble for East Stroudsburg in a 38-23 win over Millersville.
