It’s a long high school football weekend with 22 games spread over four days because of Yom Kippur and the schedule includes a Saturday night game in Jackson that just may determine who wins the Class A South championship.

Among the eight games on today’s schedule is an afternoon contest in which Ocean visits Manasquan while tonight Toms River North travels to winless Marlboro. The marquee matchup though pits the top two teams in Class A Central against one another as 3-0 St. John Vianney visits 2-0 Rumson who will be without Princeton-bound running back Charlie Volker, who is sidelined with an ankle injury.

Tomorrow afternoon Lakewood looks to make it four straight wins to open the season when the Piners host Jackson Liberty.  Led by Chapelle Cook, Datrell Reed and Amir Tyler the Piners have emerged as the co-favorites in Class B South following Barnegat’s upset loss to Central earlier in the season.  The Friday night schedule will also find Brick Memorial seeking its third straight win at home against Toms River East, Barnegat visiting Donovan Catholic, Point Boro heading to Manchester, Central playing at Pinelands and Point Beach hosting Spotswood.

Saturday afternoon Toms River South will visit a Lacey Lions team seeking to end an 8-game losing streak going back to last season.

Saturday night in Jackson the Jaguars meet Brick with first place in Class A South on the line.  Last year they faced one another in the final game of the regular season with the visiting Jaguars winning 9-7 to clinch the division title. The Green Dragons would go on to win the Central Jersey Group 4 title while Jackson lost in the South Jersey Group 5 semifinals. This year they are both in Central Jersey Group 4 so it’s possible this is the first of two games in which they will face one another. Neither team has been tested yet in winning their first three games by blowout margins. The long weekend of football ends Sunday in Manahawkin with Southern hosting Howell.

Guests on tonight’s Investors Bank High School Football Show will include Brick coach Rob Dahl and senior standout Ray Fattaruso along with Red Bank Catholic coach Jim Portela and senior wide receiver Trevor Cowley.  The show airs from 7-8:30 on NewsTalk Radio WOBM 1160/1310 AM and at ShoreSportsNetwork.com.  It’s broadcast live from the Water Street Grille in Toms River.
